The Hundredth Monkey

by
Ken Keyes

The Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, has been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years.

In 1952, on the island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkeys liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant.

An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers, too.

This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists.

Between 1953 and 1958 all of the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable.

Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.

Then something startling took place. In the autumn of 1958, a certain number of Koshima monkeys were washing sweet potatoes - the exact number is not known.

Let us suppose that when the sun rose one morning there were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their sweet potatoes.

Let us further suppose that later that morning the hundred monkey learned to wash potatoes.

THEN IT HAPPENED!

By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet potatoes before eating them. The added energy of this hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough!

But notice: A most surprising thing observed by these scientists was that the habit of washing sweet potatoes then jumped over the sea ... Colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop of monkeys at Takasakiyama began washing their sweet potatoes.

Thus, when a certain critical number achieves an awareness, this new awareness may be communicated from mind to mind.

Although the exact number may vary, this Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon means that when only a limited number of people know of a new way, it may remain the conscious property of these people.

But there is a point at which if only one more person tunes-in to a new awareness, a field is strengthened so that this awareness is picked up by almost everyone!

***

The above story is an example of, "Critical Mass Consciousness," unfortunately the statement "..washing sweet potatoes then jumped over the sea... Colonies of monkeys on other islands... began washing their sweet potatoes," is just not true.

The Hundredth Monkey Revisited

Going back to the original sources puts a new light on this popular story by Elaine Myers

THE STORY OF "The Hundredth Monkey" has recently become popular in our culture as a strategy for social change. Lyall Watson first told it in Lifetide (pp147- 148), but its most widely known version is the opening to the book The Hundredth Monkey, by Ken Keyes. The story is based on research with monkeys on a northern Japanese Island, and its central idea is that when enough individuals in a population adopt a new idea or behavior, there occurs an ideological breakthrough that allows this new awareness to be communicated directly from mind to mind without the connection of external experience and then all individuals in the population spontaneously adopt it. "It may be that when enough of us hold something to be true, it becomes
true for everyone." (Watson, p148) I found this to be a very appealing and believable idea.

However, when I went back to the original research reports cited by Watson, I did not find the same story that he tells. Where he claims to have had to improvise details, the research reports are quite precise, and they do not support the "ideological breakthrough" phenomenon. At first I was disappointed; but as I delved deeper into the research I found a growing appreciation for the lessons he real story of these monkeys has for us. Based on what I have learned from the Japan Monkey Center reports in Primates, vol. 2, vol. 5 and vol. 6, here is how the real story seems to have gone.

Up until 1958, Keyes' description follows the research quite closely, although not all the young monkeys in the troop learned to wash the potatoes. By March, 1958, 15 of the 19 young monkeys (aged two to seven years) and 2 of the 11 adults were washing sweet potatoes. Up to this time, the propagation of the innovative behavior was on an individual basis, along family lines and playmate relationships. Most of the young monkeys began to wash the potatoes when they were one to two and a half years old. Males older than 4 years, who had little contact with the young monkeys, did not acquire the behavior.

By 1959, the sweet potato washing was no longer a new behavior to the group. Monkeys that had acquired the behavior as juveniles were growing up and having their own babies. This new generation of babies learned sweet potato washing behavior through the normal cultural pattern of the young imitating their mothers. By January, 1962, almost all the monkeys in the Koshima troop, excepting those adults born before 1950, were observed to be washing their sweet potatoes. If an individual monkey had not started to wash sweet potatoes by the time he was an adult, he was unlikely to learn it later, regardless of how widespread it became among the younger members of the troop.

In the original reports, there was no mention of the group passing a critical threshold that would impart the idea to the entire troop. The older monkeys remained steadfastly ignorant of the new behavior. Likewise, there was no mention of widespread sweet potato washing in other monkey troops. There was mention of occasional sweet potato washing by individual monkeys in other troops, but I think there are other simpler explanations for such occurrences. If there was an Imo in one troop, there could be other Imo-like monkeys in other troops.

Instead of an example of the spontaneous transmission of ideas, I think the story of the Japanese monkeys is a good example of the propagation of a paradigm shift, as in Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. The truly innovative points of view tend to come from those on the edge between youth and adulthood. The older generation continues to cling to the world view they grew up with. The new idea does not become universal until the older generation withdraws from power, and a younger generation matures within the new point of view. [ People that have a vested interest in the Status Quo... the very old, the rich, and the powerful, for the most part, do not seek or accept change.]

Is there some magic key that provides a short cut to cultural transformation?

***

[I believe, that a Spiritual Critical Mass Consciousness is rapidly expanding among the earth's populations today. If enough people believe (have faith) that something will happen... it must happen.]

Definitions:

Mass consciousness—–The combined awareness of all human beings on the Earth plane.

Critical mass—–The smallest mass that causes a reaction or a fundamental change. In human spiritual terms it is the minimum number of people required in a collective consciousness to shift the mass consciousness to a new level of vibrational awareness of the Creator’s Light.

Some Viewpoints:

Natural Critical Mass Consciousness

"There is a certain point where a rare form of behavior shared by few suddenly reaches a point of growth where a total shift of consciousness spreads to the entire population."

There is no evidence of this effect. There is evidence that at a certain point, we could call it a critical mass, new behavior can "catch on quickly," it gains momentum, but this new behavior must lead to new insights into/about the problems of the day, and they must become a part of natural cultural behavior. This is important... It has to become a cultural practice that is supported by the culture/social world, and for that to happen the practice must lead to new knowledge about real problems.

There is no evidence of spontaneous shifts due to a critical mass of numbers. Is there a critical mass that is reached that causes all of the flowers to bloom at the same time in springtime? Or could it just be the natural next step in their own development.

"I firmly believe we are on the precipice of just such a critical mass
and transformation (within the next few years to a decade).Ii doubt
it will mean peace for all time, but it will definitely mean an
overall shift upward on the chart for all humanity."

"I also believe we are on the edge. I think it will be several decades, three
or five generations possibly, before the full effects of this transformation
are felt, but I do think it will effect the whole of humanity."

Like all great shifts in the cultural/social world, the change can manifest in the American Revolution form with its foundation of the Declaration of Independence and the U. S. Constitution, "or" it can manifest in the French Revolution form with its nightmare of the blade.

Both expressions, manifestations, of the orange meme, the French let lose the seeds of years of suffering, the Americans set the seeds of an almost impossible goal, the universal rights of man, and I think it is one of America's saving graces. The American Dream in its many forms, the good life in all the many ways we, as Americans, have attempted to live it.

As you point out later on -- "For the root matter is the mother of all things." -- C. G. Jung. America's founding principles set American's course. There have been many times when I wondered if the founding fathers knew fully aware of the task they had set for us. To live more in accord with the principles that all human beings are created equal, that all beings are endowed with the natural rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

We are haunted by these words, they are both a curse and a blessing. When the U. S. Constitution was ratified perhaps only 10% of the population was at the same level of development expressed by the principle found in the U. S. Constitution.

"The brilliance of this document [U. S. Constitution] is that is found a way to institutionalize the world centric, post conventional stance and let it act as a governance system for people who were not, for the most part, at that higher level. The Constitution itself thus became a pacer of transformation, gently encouraging every activity within its reach to stand within a world centric, post conventional, non-ethnocentric moral atmosphere." Hitting Critical Mass by Aluna Joy Yaxk'in

9/11/2000

The Leap to Critical Mass Consciousness

The subtle clues are evidence that something new is upon us. The changes that we have been waiting for are here at last. But did we notice the subtle shift? We have grown and evolved through wave after wave of heightened energy. For a while it seemed that each wave was the same as the last, packed with a little more punch each time around. These waves have been the same energy that has been systematically pounding us since the 60's.

Just as we began to get bored and impatient with the process... it happened! I feel like a kid who is too excited to speak about something for fear of jinxing it. But I am going to say it anyway... I think we just hit critical mass! I think that enough conscious people have done enough good work and held positive intent that we have made the leap.

This new wave of energy has been affecting us differently and more deeply than before. Physically we have been feeling internal quaking. The building pressure has been causing nausea, dizziness, head pressure and strange headaches, eyeball pressure and visual changes, sensitivity to sound, short-term memory loss, chest pains and pressure, digestive disturbances, erratic sleep... all adding up to a worn out feeling. We know that our bodies take more time to adjust to shifting energy than our spirit does. When we get downloaded with new energies it can cause temporary feeling of pressure as the plates in our heads shifts. Digestive problems and chest pressure can be caused by the kundalini rising.

These physical symptoms are nothing new. We have felt them before, but what is different is how they are affecting us emotionally. We have been feeling a general disinterest in goals, possessions, money, food and even relationships. Our passion and motivations have vanished! This global dependency leaves us feeling directionless, passionless and visionless and not caring this is so.

Did we finally get to the place where we have become desireless? If we are desireless and have no attachment to outcome or to anything at all, can we go on they way we have been? Absolutely not, and this is what excites me today. What if becoming desireless is the last stage before we move to the promised land, the next reality or the New Age?

It is clear that we are at a crossroads where we will decide if we still have something to contribute. Maybe what we thought we were contributing is shifting with everything else. We are letting go of what we were and becoming who we really are now! We are letting go of attachments and this frees us to all the new and limitless possibilities in front of us now. Ancient cultures all over the world teach about being desireless and living non-attachment.

For thousands of years we have worked to obtain these attitudes. We have been monks in the mountain cave, unhampered by material or worldly goods. We have been servants of God, relinquishing everything.

We have tried so hard to live these truths, and over and over we found it did not come easily to us, if at all. What we once thought was hard spiritual work or something that took great dedication and sacrifice seems to be just happening to us. Did we just enter a cosmic doorway in which we are manifesting our dreams or, did we just hit critical mass?

If we are letting go of that old reality, will we just fade away, shift into another dimension, or create a huge cataclysmic earth shift? The predictions are vast and varied, scary and beautiful. But predictions can only be based on what we know and what we have done in the past. Maybe there are new ways to move though a shift of the ages. If we look at how the shifts are already happening with little effort, then why would the next shift be any different? Why do we always think getting where we want has to be hard work?

Why do we feel that the shift of the ages means we are going to lose what is important to us, that people will die horrible deaths while the earth violently shakes? Why do we approach this exciting time with such trepidation and desperate anticipation. Maybe it is time to let go of our out dated beliefs based in past difficulties. Maybe spirit and the natural progression of life is showing us a different way.

Maybe in our TRYING to evolve we have created unnecessary challenges for us all. Maybe if we had lived in BE-ingness the challenges of the past would have been glorious and blissful events. Why was it so hard for us to just "Let go and LET GOD?" I have to admit I am feeling a little silly right now, knowing how hard I tried over the years and how much sacrifice I endured to get to a place that was just handed to me when I simply gave up!

It only takes a small percentage of the population to become awake for consciousness to shift the global mind set. The numbers are arguable and not important here. But as a rough example, when 100 people live peace and compassion, then 1000 will be effected. If 1000 are consciously aware, 10,000 or more are shifted. A great example of critical mass was the recent power black out in NY.

In the past black outs and other problems caused a huge wave of looting and crime. But this time the citizen of New York maintained a peaceful and helpful tone. Was this just a fluke? I don't think so. I think it is a small sign of what is to come. Just as it takes our body time to shift to the changes, so it is with Mother earth and all her inhabitants. In a little time the positive shift will become more apparent.

We can say this shift was caused by Mars closest approach to Earth in 60 thousand years, or to the nearing genesis point of ancient Mayan cycles... or even the mass consciousness of at thousands of peaceful folks helping each other out during a black out.

Without huge global earth shifts, collapses of the governments of the world, global plagues, floods and famine we have come to a point where enough work has been done. We are now shifting the planetary consciousness and all we have to do is let go and let GOD. When we let go of what has been and allow for a brighter future there is noting that can stop us now.

A Message from the Akashic Records:

"Manifesting The Miraculous"

By Lumari

From: http://www.lumari.com

Recording Shifts in Critical Mass Consciousness

Lumari has invited us to speak on this topic, to share our understanding with you. We, the Akashic, do not address people or beings in this way. Yet, because of our relationship with Lumari and because of the book she has written with us and about us, we have decided to agree to address you this singular time. We thank you for your attention.

"Manifesting the Miraculous"

Dear Light Bringers, This is a moment in the universe when the highest dreams are possible. This is a moment in the universe, when awakening and transformation are possible. To bring about a great transformation, a critical mass of energy must be present. This critical mass may be of consciousness or matter or momentum, yet it is a propulsion towards a shift. You and your planet are moving toward that critical build-up of energy where a new shift in consciousness is very possible.

We, in the Akashic, have seen this momentum before. We have seen it in a leap towards greater mass awareness in many different star systems and civilizations. We track those shifts and all shifts in the Akashic Records. We hold the records of all consciousness and their journeys in life. We have seen many different methods through which a new shift in awareness and deeper understanding has unfolded. We know that your planet and all of Her inhabitants are heading for the critical mass that can create a supreme shift in consciousness filled with bounty and blessing.

We address to you now, because in this time of great opportunity your choices will certainly outweigh your intentions in manifesting the world you truly seek. Many have said to you that your intentions will create what you desire. This is only partly true. Your actions, in alignment with your intentions and your clear wisdom, will create the world. There are many ways in which to manifest things. You are poised at a particular time in cosmic reality when you can harness the energy and direct it towards blessed transformation and spiritual community.

"The choices you make and the actions you take will manifest the truth of your being."

We want to clarify this, so that each of you has a clear opportunity to participate in manifesting the miracles that you seek for yourselves and your world. Your actions and their results reveal facets of manifestation. If you profess your love for another person and yet your actions undermine their confidence, well-being and joy, then your are not in the activity of love.

Love inspires and instills confidence, well-being and joy. If your relationship or your love for another and with another brings them doubt, insecurity and fear or dread, then love is not present. You may intend to love that person, but these intentions do not have the clear energy of love and are not promoting that love in this instance.

Therefore, if you want honor and appreciation and peace and bounty in this world, you must bring about those qualities and circumstances through actions. Your intentions will not manifest these properties and will not bring about the changes necessary to disintegrate the clouds and illuminate your world with clear, Divine light. Your personal and collective intentions can guide your understanding and your search, but it is your actions that will liberate your hearts and your world.

It is also important to discover your own way, your own path in these choices and actions. This is why we agreed to Lumari's request to interview us in her/our book "AKASHIC RECORDS" and this is why we agreed to speak with you through Lumari, today. Your personal clarity and deep knowing is also needed for this transformational shift. As the Akashic, we hold the information about your journey.

We keep all manner of information and vibrational alignments within our care. Perhaps it is time for you to learn more about your deeper inner being, so you may align with your own path as you align with the new shift in consciousness. In this way, you will act from your spiritual integrity and make choices and take actions that are in harmony with the brightest light you each hold.

We speak of this so you may fully participate in this awakening. When you walk within your own truth of being and you make choices aligned with your highest awareness, then the actions you take will help bring about the miraculous shift in awareness that you have come to earth to enact. If the awakening succeeds, then you will know that you have focused your energy and actions on this great shift.

You will know, deep within your essence, that you have helped and guided this shift towards a blessed and glorious event of consciousness. Clear choices, united with your deeper purpose will generate the mindful actions. These mindful actions will focus the higher consciousness into the critical mass that will enliven your individual essence and your world with the stream of Divine energy for pure illumination.

We thank you for opportunity to address you in this manner.

We would like to add, that if you wish to contact us and learn more about us and the ways you may connect with us, we then urge you to purchase our book "AKASHIC RECORDS Collective Keepers of Divine Expression" by Lumari. This book which we wrote through our interviews with Lumari will explain how we truly engage all wisdom. It will provide you with the best and most efficient ways to connect with us for your own personal growth and understanding.

In Clear Light, The Collective Keepers of Divine Expression

Free Energy and Spiritual Responsibility

with Jeane Manning

by Carol Hiltner

Technology amd Critical Mass Consciousness

Jeane Manning, author of The Coming Energy Revolution: The Search for Free Energy, sees the availability of new technology as very much a spiritual issue. Free energy, she feels, may become available only as we ourselves become conscious enough to be responsible with it.

Jeane: I have always been most interested in the spiritual implications of new-energy technologies. I think a critical mass of consciousness will be required before these technologies can blossom forth to their full potential.

The twentieth-century Western worldview about technology generally led us away from higher consciousness rather than toward the Light within. It tended toward the materialistic, and was unaware of technologies that could be based on expanded spiritual understandings.

In contrast, Walter Russell's visions, Nikola Tesla's advanced concepts, (for more information click "Home" at bottom of Tesla's biography)and Viktor Schauberger's , harmony-with-nature inventions are in line with a more spirit-based world view.

Carol: Do you imagine that the spiritual awareness will develop concurrently with the technology?

Jeane: The development of the technology could enable people to expand their horizons spiritually. They would be more likely to take a step forward spiritually if they could understand the abundance. There is an Energy more beautiful and expressive and intelligent than the limits of energy we are taught about.

Before I got involved with the technology end of it, spiritual studies led me to see that there is an Energy that courses throughout universes. Whether it comes from a Great Sun in the center of the universe, or wherever, it starts out a lot more refined in vibration and it's stepped down as it comes into the lower worlds — into the physical worlds.

So far, we've been dealing with the coarser part of the spectrum of this energy in our technologies. But in their experiments, a few frontier researchers have come to know the reality of an Energy that is closer to the life-force energy.

There are a few, like Dale Pond with his research into sympathetic vibratory physics, who understand that the spectrum goes all the way up to spiritual energies — that when we are enlightened enough, our technologies eventually could be running on spiritual energies.

The closer we get to these more esoteric technologies, the more enlightened we must be as a species. Spiritually-based powers require a lot more responsibility than even the most powerful but coarser technologies that we have now.

Carol: Then are you thinking that the new energy is part of a spiritual evolutionary process?Jeane: Yes, our spiritual evolution and the technological revolution — or evolution are all interwoven. I wouldn't say that technological progress is necessary to move forward spiritually, but we must definitely expand our awareness before we're going to be allowed the more powerful energies in our technologies.

I've been seeking answers to some of these questions beyond technology. It's been twenty years since I first met an inventor who made claims of a nonconventional energy device, and I have seen through the years that, yes, people have built prototypes that did prove that there's something going on beyond what we're taught in conventional science classes.

So why, after all these years, aren't any of these on the market yet?

Carol: And do you have ideas about that?

Jeane: I think it's a matter of humanity's being mature enough to be allowed these powerful technologies. The lesson of responsibility seems to be the one that we have to learn.

And maybe we learned it the hard way by the degradation of the planet, through our carelessness and our ignorance. Now, we are rubbing our noses in the mess we have made — literally. So if that doesn't teach us, I don't know what will.

How can people continue to ignore that we are nearly killing our planet?

Carol: So do you think that the new-energy technology has not been able to get into the marketplace because some spiritual guidance is keeping track, and keeping us from it?

Jeane: I don't know if I'd put it that way. But as a species, we have spiritual lessons to learn — hard lessons — before we will be able to mature a bit further. I don't know who or what is pulling the strings, but this is my hypothesis. What else can explain it?

It's very baffling that so many people have made breakthroughs and yet they are still not on the market. Yes, I know it is a political story, but I think it's also a spiritual story.

Carol: Then do you think, when we finally do have a practical introduction of the technology, that it will herald an increased consciousness?

Jeane: It may be a sign that we have taken a step forward as a species. And I think that we are definitely maturing pretty fast. Witness all the expressions of love going back and forth between ordinary people on the planet on the Internet in the last few months.

And there's another aspect that's related to consciousness, that of "critical mass."

Are you familiar with the work of Rupert Sheldrake about morphogenic fields?

Carol: Ah, yes, but if you could explain. . .

Jeane: It's the "hundredth monkey" story — when a critical mass of beings becomes aware of something, then all of sudden it's easier for others to learn it. And that's partly why I've continued to try to get out the message that these things are possible for us.

It's not been an easy road, but I've stuck with this, because I think it's important to get the word out. People need to know that something is available, so that they can envision it.

Then, as Gregg Braden is teaching about prayer — peace is the example he uses — when we know that it's available, we can be there with what we want, and give thanks.

But people can't envision themselves in a new energy future if they only read the newspaper and standard sources of information that say we are going to run out of oil and there is going to be a crunch and we are leaving a mess for our children. That there's no easy way around it.

If people can just envision a future with an abundance of clean energy that we can use to clean up the planet, then it's just a little bit easier for it to happen.

But more and more people are becoming aware, now, that there are alternatives that they aren't hearing about through conventional sources. So I think we are moving closer to that critical mass of consciousness that can create something else.

Carol: Regarding your experience as a journalist, since the technology has not gotten out there, what has your outlet been? You have obviously made a choice to speak from the heart rather than from the pocketbook. What do you do when the mainstream media turns its back?

Jeane: It's a strange path of service, but it's the one I stumbled into, and stayed on.

Over the years, I tried to get conventional environmental publications to do something about nonconventional energy technology. And it's true, they just weren't interested, because it wasn't a direction they were looking in for their issues.

At first that really bothered me, because these were my friends. At one point, at Greenpeace in Vancouver, these were my coworkers! It was disappointing that they didn't want to hear. But I can understand some of their reasons.

Carol: What reasons? I'm curious.

Jeane: Mainly, fear and anger against all technology. Because of what technology has done to our planet.

But the problem with technology, as I said at the beginning, is that we've used the wrong type of technology. Victor Schauberger, the Austrian forester, was the first to tell the world about the technology in harmony with nature.

Our current technology predominantly uses the destructive half of nature's range of motions — the outwardly expanding motions, those that break down, and destroy, and heat — to get rid of things, whether through composting, or fires, or whatever.

Twentieth-century science emphasized entropy. The experts said that the universe was dying a"heat death." And the collective consciousness went along. So we used technologies that burned fuels or exploded the atom, and soil-destroying technologies, and so on. And we have created a world where societies, too, are breaking down.

But nature also has inward-spiraling, cooling, quiet, creative motions. And we could have technologies based on those principles. So blanket opposition to technology is not necessary.

There is good technology and there is ignorant technology. There's creative, revitalizing technology... as opposed to technology that leaves behind a mess, which is what we've chosen so far. Society, too, can revitalize itself if enough people believe in a better world.

But you don't even hear this debate because people don't really know there is a choice to be had.

Carol: Are you becoming more able now to get the debate even started? What is working for you, as a journalist, to get the information out?

Jeane: In Europe, I am getting more opportunity to speak out to audiences. Maybe it's because my German publisher pushed harder to get my book out to a wider audience, whereas in North America it is more of an underground seller.

Carol: So are you doing public speaking now? or writing?

Jeane: I did another book for my German publisher, which is coming out this spring. And I have an opportunity to do a book about the technologies in-harmony-with-nature that I mentioned above, with the most knowledgeable engineer on the subject in North America.

But I've had a strange path, based more on connecting inventors and researchers with each other than about earning a living. This winter, I'm living up in the mountains, out beyond the power lines and the phone lines, and it's a great place to get some writing done. But it's one of the "creative" choices regarding lifestyle that I had to make to get the writing done.

I've done some traveling around in my little pickup truck. At one point, I was even sleeping in the camper in the back of my truck in order to go across North America to connect with inventors and researchers.

It's been an adventure. It's been more a labor of love than earning a living. I have to balance that out.

Carol: Yes, I think you have lots of company in that regard. Those who choose a spiritual path have a challenge to find that balance.

Jeane: Yes. But during those adventures I have met some incredible people. It's really a privilege to know some of those scientists out there who are doing this work.

Carol: Since the technology has been, for at least this last decade, largely underground, I would imagine that the networking is very necessary.

Jeane: Yes, it is, because a lot of people don't trust organizations. And I understand why they get to that point.

And so, like a butterfly or a bee going from one place to another, I will suggest to someone, "You should be working with so-and-so, you are talking about something similar." And then they will end up working together.

That is satisfying.

The Answer Is Still Peace

Nature and Critical Mass Consciousness

The terrorist attack in London today has once again created deep anguish in our collective soul...

Around the world people yearn to find peace and give solace to the suffering and bereaved. Once again the clash of polarized enemies clamors for attention. Al-Qaeda takes a ride in this heinous and sordid crime, while Western nations seek to bring the terrorists to justice. Yet it would be naive to take the simple way out and call this an example of pure evil and depravity.

In a very real way we are all part of the London tragedy. Everyone is caught in the tangled web of social injustice, economic disparities, ecological disaster, war, and terrorism. Unless we accept this fact, we will continue with our madness of an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

Mahatma Gandhi declared that if we continue on this path the whole world would go blind. Will we ever see through our blindness and create a global community of connected humanity? To promote peace today means promoting a critical mass of consciousness where violence is never
an option.

London, like the attacks in Madrid, Bali, and Indonesia before it, should make us want to live for peace above all. I understand how it's possible to respond to terrorism with deep anger; I cannot understand responding to it with anger that goes on and on forever. There are causes behind every terrorist act and therefore hope that these causes can be changed, even as we continue to pursue justice.

We still ignore the source of global instability: religious fundamentalism which has its roots in extreme poverty, where 50% of the world lives on $2 per day, 20% of it on less than $1 per day, a world where 8 million people die each year because they are too poor to survive.

Terrorism also festers because of a lack of education, toxic nationalism, ignorance about the outside the world, and deep economic disparities. Twenty thousand children died yesterday of hunger-related causes around the world, twenty thousand will die today, and twenty thousand tomorrow. That is not part of the evening news. Why not?

Nature abhors a deep imbalance. The human species has become the most dangerous predator on our planet. Nature might be saying to herself, "Human beings were an interesting experiment that didn't work, so let's move on." Or, perhaps, our self-awareness has reached a turning point, as
Inside ourselves we've always carried the seeds of creativity.

The next creative leap isn't a mystery. Millions of people are ready to join in harmonious interaction with Nature--and with our own complex inner nature--to create a world of peace, harmony, laughter and love. Let us strengthen our intention to create that critical mass of peace consciousness. Every tear can be a drop of nourishment for the new world that wants to be born and is making itself known little by little, every day. Each one of us can help create this critical mass by becoming the embodiment of peace conciousness their peace practices:

Being Peace
Thinking Peace
Feeling Peace
Speaking Peace
Acting Peace
Creating Peace
Sharing Peace
Celebrating Peace.

The Alliance for the New Humanity is committed to connecting and strengthening the synaptic network of the emerging planetary mind.
